PU Casting Resins
The PU-Casting resins form a very versitile group of artificial resins (plastics) that are pleasant and easy to work with. If you are looking for extremely low viscosity and setting time, look no further.
Smooth-Cast 300 series are ultra-low viscosity, bright white casting resins with various potlife and demold time. Vacuum degassing is not necessary. They offer the convenience of a one to one mix ratio (one part A to one part B by volume). Applications include reproducing small to medium size sculptures, cold cast bronze castings, making prototype models, roto cast pieces, special effect props and decorative jewelry.
Smooth-Cast 325 series are color neutral fast-cast resins that were developed specifically for adding pigments and fillers to achieve true color representation or filler effect. The ColorMatchtm Series has a very low viscosity and requires no degassing. Demold times range from about 10 minutes to 2-4 hours and the mixing ratio is 1A: 1B by volume. Applications include making pigmented prototype models or figures, special effect props, reproducing small to medium size sculptures, decorative jewelry, creating marble and wood grain casting effects or duplicating the look of real metal by adding bronze, brass or other metal powders.
Smooth-Cast Onyx is a resin that cures quickly at room temperature to a deep black, solid plastic. ONYX® offers the convenience of a 1A:1B by volume mix ratio and has a very low viscosity, so it is easy to mix and pour. ONYX® has an ultimate shore hardness of 80D and offers higher physical properties and higher heat resistance vs. other general purpose resins, it is great for doing fast cold cast bronze, brass, copper, nickel/silver, etc.
Feather Lite is a heavily filled low-density urethane casting resin. Cured plastic is lightweight (it floats in water!) and has a much lower density than other casting resins. Feather Lite features a convenient 1A:1B by volume mix ratio. Cured plastic is strong and can be carved, machined, drilled, sanded, etc. Feather Lite can be pigmented with SO Strong color tints prior to casting and finished castings can be painted. Feather Lite can be used for a variety of art or industrial design related applications including reproducing sculpture, making fishing lures, prototype model making, casting doll heads and figures, etc
Smooth-Cast ROTO is a low viscosity liquid plastic that gradually builds up, making it ideal for rotational casting applications. Castings will be hollow and lightweight allowing you to use less material to attain the same finished look (substantially lowering your material costs). Fully cured castings are semi-rigid and exhibit good impact resistance. Castings resist moisture and mild solvents and can be machined, sanded and painted. Color effects are possible by adding SO-Strong color tints. ROTO is ideal for making hollow rotationally cast parts.
Task-18 is a relatively low viscosity aluminum filled urethane casting resin that was developed specifically for making short run vacuum forming molds. It cures overnight at room temperature with negligible shrinkage to a very hard plastic that has a very high compressive and flexural strength and can be polished, machined, drilled, painted, etc. It is also used to make industrial production parts, prototype parts and tracing patterns.
Smooth-Cast Onyx is a mercury-free urethane resin that cures at room temperature to a deep black, solid plastic.
ONYX resins offer the convenience of a 1A:1B by volume mix ratio and have very low viscosities, so they are easy to mix and pour. ONYX resins have an ultimate Shore hardness of 80D and offer higher physical properties and higher heat resistance vs. other general purpose resins. ONYX resins are available in 2 speeds
ONYX FAST resin has a pot life of 2.5 minutes and a cure time of 10-15 minutes, while ONYX SLOW has a pot life of 5 minutes and a cure time of 90 minutes.
Advantages that ONYX resins offer over other resins;
1) if you desire a black casting, adding color pigment is not necessary
2) cured plastic is ultra-black and darker than competitive black resins, 3) cured ONYX® plastic can be polished and buffed to a high gloss shine and
4) ONYX offers higher heat resistance vs. competitive black resins, 5) unlike other black resins, ONYX does not contain mercury
6) ONYX is less expensive vs. other black resins.
Applications include reproducing sculpture, making prototypes and potting / encapsulation. Due to it's quick cure time and hardness, ONYX FAST is a good choice for creating fast cold cast bronze, brass, copper, nickel/silver, etc. effects.
Crystal-Clear 200 series are water white clear casting resins made specifically for applications that require absolute clarity. Crystal Clear products cure at room temperature with negligible shrinkage. Cured castings are UV Resistant and are not brittle. Vibrant colors and color effects are achieved by adding pigment dispersions. Applications include encapsulation, making prototype models, lenses, sculpture reproductions, decorative cast pieces, jewelry, prototype models, special effects and props.
SMASH!Plastic is a urethane liquid plastic designed to shatter/crumble on impact (“breakaway glass”). SMASH!tm is water clear and, once fully cured, shatters like glass. It can be cast solid in thin sections to make window panes or rotationally cast to form hollow bottles, jars or other glass-like objects to be used as breakable props for movie and stage productions. Cured castings are UV RESISTANT. Vibrant colors and color effects are achieved by adding pigment dispersions.
Shell Shock FAST and Shell Shock SLOW are thixotropic plastics that self thicken when mixed and can be brushed onto a variety of surfaces or into rubber molds. When Parts A and B are mixed in proper proportion it cures at room temperature with virtually no shrinkage to a hard, durable plastic that exhibits good compressive and flexural strength. Fully cured castings are rigid and can be sanded, primed and painted. Shell Shock plastics are ideal for making fast, lightweight rigid molds for creating silicone appliances and effects (use as a replacement for ‘stone molds’). You can also brush a “gel coat” into a rubber mold and back it up with rigid foam, creating a highly detailed lightweight casting. These products can also be brushed onto styrofoam (polystyrol) as an impact resistant coating that can be sanded, primed and painted. Shell Shock plastics can also be used to make rigid support shells for brush on rubber molds.
Plasti-Paste is a two component fiber resin that is designed for vertical surface application. Part A is a liquid and Part B is a paste. Mix ratio is 1A : 3B by volume (41A:100B by weight). It has no odor and pot life is 8 – 10 minutes depending on mass. Demold time (can be handled) is about 90 minutes depending on mass. Plasti-Paste holds a vertical surface without sagging and cures to a strong, durable and lightweight plastic. Suitable as a mother mold / support shell (reinforces shape of rubber mold during casting), or as a laminating material. Add cabosil or other filler as an extender or for special effects.
